Chapter Nine

“Hello, padre,” I said and then just shot Indira a half-shrug when I caught her knowing eyes. “I’m sorry, we weren’t aware this place wasn’t open to the public…”

“No,” he said sharply. “You shouldn’t have even been able to cross the threshold. How did you do it?”

The man was dressed in a typical pastor’s outfit, in an all black suit that was neatly pressed with a white collar around his neck, but there was something in his clenched jaw and wide shoulders that made him look unlike any priest I’d ever seen.

“What?” Penny asked.

“We… There was a door,” Demi said quickly.

“We noticed there was a door to what we presumed was an antechamber, and we were just curious as to--”

“That door isn’t even visible to the public, let alone passable,” the pastor interrupted again, and his voice was hard and clipped as he stared at the five of us with sharp blue eyes. “Which means you are not of the public, and you are certainly not human.”

I suddenly realized that, despite being slap bang in the middle of Mexico, this man’s voice wasn’t even remotely Hispanic. He didn’t roll his ‘r’s nor did he respond to the fact I’d called him padre, and an excited jolt coursed through me as I studied him a little more and started to put the pieces together.

He had thick dirty-blond hair cut short like he’d been in the military, with a hard square jaw and piercing blue eyes. His lower face was covered with a thin coating of both blond and white stubble, and he was surprisingly tall and wide and built like a football player.

“You’re Jorun!” I suddenly gasped. “Right? Because you’re definitely not a Catholic priest, and you’re definitely not Mexican, either, so you must be--”

“Explain yourselves!” Jorun’s voice became suddenly thunderous, and my excited babble died down into a silence.

“I’m sorry,” I eventually said, and I did my best to keep my voice pleasantly calm. “We don’t mean to intrude. We have reason to believe you could help us, and if we could just explain--”

“No!” Jorun shouted, and the level of his voice made us all jump. “I did not want to be found, and now I have to start all over again! You’ve condemned the innocents in this church to death!”

“Well, hold on just a second,” I said and lifted my hands up with my palms facing outward. “There’s no need for that, really, we don’t mean you any harm.”

“I have to dispose of any evidence that I was ever here,” Jorun said through a tightly clenched jaw. “I have to destroy this place.”

“No, you don’t,” I said quickly. “And you definitely don’t have to kill everyone in here, please, if you could just let me--”

“She cannot find me!” Jorun screamed, and his blue eyes were wide with both fear and fury.

“You mean Frida?” I asked, and I intended the name-drop to shock him into silence, but it actually did the complete and total opposite.

“I knew it!” he snarled and pointed an accusatory finger at me.
